Doctors in Shetland Can Now Prescribe Nature to Patients

bridge in woodsImagine being given a prescription to take a long walk in the woods or a stroll on the beach. Or, perhaps toil in your garden. On our Scottish island Shetland, such notions can now be a reality. Since October 5, 2018, general practitioners there are now authorised to give nature prescriptions to their patients.

Considered to be the first program of its kind in the U.K., it comes with a year-long checklist of prescription recommendations. These include amusing and light-hearted ones such as “borrow a dog and take it for a walk,” “bury your face in the grass,” and “appreciate a cloud.”

At Aberdeen Chiropractic Clinic, we fully support the idea of spending time in the outdoors, breathing in fresh air, exercising, and allowing your cares to dissipate.

The Health Benefits of Being One With Nature

The physical and mental benefits of connecting with nature have been well evidenced by many studies. Those with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, heart disease, and more may benefit significantly from spending 90 minutes of their day outdoors. Some benefits of spending time outdoors may include the following:

  • Decreased anxiety
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Increased happiness
  • Decreased aggression
  • Reduced ADHD symptoms
  • Improved pain control
  • Boosted immune system
