Eggs Get Cracked – People Get Adjusted – Why Do Your Joints Click?

Chiropractor Aberdeen AdjustmentMany people cringe at the sound of knuckles, elbows and other joints cracking. For years, experts have debated whether or not this common cracking could cause joint problems.
It has recently been confirmed that this ‘popping’ is due to a small bubble forming between your joints. The bubble forms when your joints move apart, forming a kind of vacuum in the synovial fluid, a slippery substance that lubricates your joints.

People who can deliberately make joints like knuckles pop usually do so by pushing or pulling the joint in such a way as to make an air bubble appear with a sudden pop. This is called joint cavitation. Once the bubble is there the joint will not pop again until all the air has been reabsorbed.

However, there are other cracking noises and sensations that may of concern. Snapping and cracking noises can be caused by osteoarthritis as a consequence of the natural ageing process, or following a trauma or disease in the joint. In this case the cartilage, which eases friction in the joint breaks down, so that movement causes painful friction and crunching noises.

Snapping noises and sensations, on the other hand, are likely to be caused by muscle or tendon moving across a bone. This happens when a tendon is slightly loose, and occurs most often in the hip, knee, ankle, wrist and shoulder. This could eventually lead to bursitis, or inflammation of the fluid-filled sac that allows muscle to move smoothly over bone.

So why do chiropractors sometimes cause joints to click?, we call it an adjustment or manipulation. Chiropractic manipulation takes advantage of the phenomenon of cavitation to induce movement in stiff and painful joints and correct looseness in the neighbouring joints. This reduces the likelihood of accidental popping. In other words, popping joints in the correct way relieves stiffness and makes neighbouring joints more stable.

Back Pain and Modern Lifestyles

Chiropractor Aberdeen Back PainMisaligned and restricted spinal joints can be the root cause of pain and chiropractic care can help relieve the stubborn low back pain, neck pain and tension headaches.

Did you know… It is estimated that a sixth of the UK population suffers from back pain at any one time.

And… According to the National Office of Statistics, a staggering 31 million days of work were lost last year [2016] due to back, neck and muscles problems.

These huge numbers of back and neck related complaints have been linked to our modern lifestyles and lack of steps taken by many of us to prevent the problems before they become too serious.

Sitting in an office

What’s the problem? Sitting for long periods of time lessens blood flow to the discs that cushion your spine and thus places more pressure on it than walking or standing.

What can you do?

  • It is crucial that you have a good posture while sitting at your desk
  • Make sure you head is straight and not tilted down when you are reading or typing
  • Avoid slouching and if it is possible, tilt your chair back slightly to help alleviate and excess pressure on your spine and make sure your feet are placed firmly hip width apart on the floor
  • Take regular breaks to stand up, stretch and walk around

Increasing your exercise

What’s the problem? It is advised that we take 10,000 steps a day most of us normally only manage to get between 3,000 and 4,000.

What can you do? If possible park further away from your destination or get off the tube a few stops before you normally would and walk the rest of the way

Why is waking so good for us? As walking is a good, low impact exercise, it can not only help to relieve back pain but also prevent it without putting too much strain on your body. Even walking for just 30 minutes a day 3 – 5 times a week can have real benefits for your back health and your overall wellbeing
